Adult Groups

Assertiveness

February 7 – April 11, 2018
Wednesdays 6:30 – 8:30 pm
Fee: $30

This ten week course explores the concept of assertiveness in the context of our culture, gender, family of origin, and belief system.  A significant component of assertiveness is communication.  Other topics covered include accepting compliments, receiving criticism, and learning how to confront in a healthy way.

Communication Skills

February 10 & March 10, 2018
Saturdays (2 sessions) 8:30 am – 12:00 pm
Fee: $30

This 2 session educational program is for individuals and couples of any description (adults only) who want to learn the basics of communication with emphasis on listening, understanding each other’s background, and respecting each other. Communication and problem solving skills will also be presented.

 

Exploring Mindfulness

October 25 – December 13, 2017
Wednesdays 9:00 – 10:45 am
Fee: Free

This course provides a safe, ongoing group for women survivors of trauma to explore the relationship between motion and emotion, create personal movement expressions, communicate interpersonal experience, and discover the embodied nature of mindfulness.

 

Men’s Anger Management

October 4 – December 6, 2017
Wednesdays 6:30 – 8:30 pm
Fee: $30 per person *

This ten week course is designed for men who desire to understand and manage their anger more effectively. We look at how men and women feel & express anger differently. A major focus of the course is to discover the feelings that fuel anger and how to put them into words. Techniques are developed to express our anger in less harmful ways.  

 

Transforming Shame

April 3 – June 19, 2018
Tuesdays 6:30 – 8:30 pm
Fee: $30 per person *

Child & Family Groups

Calm Kids (Ages 6-8)

November 7 – December 12, 2017
Tuesdays 3:15 – 4:45 pm
Fee: FREE

This 6 session group is for kids aged 6 – 8 years and teaches calming techniques for kids experiencing anxiety. 

 

LGBT-Q (Ages 14-19)
September 11, 2017 – June 30, 2018

Wednesdays @ Teen Junction
3:30 – 5:00 pm

Fee: FREE

This group provides a safe space for youth and allies from ages 14 – 19. This is a fun and informative group that offers facilitator and peer support in a welcoming environment. Located upstairs at Teen Junction Vernon – 3104 37 Avenue. 

 

Little Owl Family Circle
September 11, 2017 – June 25, 2018

Mondays (Drop in) @ Peace Lutheran Hall

This program is a drop-in parent participation program to connect with other parents, discuss a variety of parenting topics, learn more about what our community offers and play with your child.

This group is a 3 session model that believes in the healing power of families and that parents have everything within them to support their children with tough emotions.  This type of training aims to help parents and caregivers feel better equipped to help their children understand and process emotion.

 

The Family Basket
September 19, 2017 – June 19, 2018

Tuesdays (Drop in) @ People Place

This program is designed to help families learn budget-friendly recipes, how and where to shop locally, and to encourage children to be active in the kitchen. It also provides a place to connect with other families and facilitators while sharing food prep and a meal.

ON-GOING GROUPS

Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT)

September 21 – December 7, 2017
Thursdays 6:00 – 7:30 pm
Fee: FREE

This program is a form of therapy that focuses on the relationships and connections between our thoughts, feelings, body sensations, and behaviour.  It is an educational group that teaches skills to manage thoughts and can be very effective for persons with anxiety or depression.
